Abstract

Although Brazil has a universal public health system (SUS), developed based on the concept of health as a citizen's right, there are great differences in access to the system by public or private health. This article presents a “fresh portrait” of the Brazilian health system, from the patient's perspective, through narrative accounts of a family doctor, of some paradigmatic clinical situations of day-to-day health care in different scenarios. It presents the main characteristics of public and private access, and reflects on the general health situation of the country, with emphasis on issues of health policies, accessibility, minorities, and quality of care. We conclude that current public health policies with inequities in access to the health system negatively affect the quality of care, reducing autonomy and the right to health in Brazil.
