Immersed in Evidence-Based Medicine and Clinical Practice Guidelines, sometimes it is difficult for us to delve into aspects, also of our clinical practice, such as communication. We may even find it a luxury to give us enough time during our routine practice to ask ourselves: Am I doing it right? And it seems even more complex to ask ourselves that question outside of the consultation; what happens when we are both the doctor and the patient's family?
In this article we will analyze the discomfort that arises from that fine line that we have all been able to cross at some point, or that perhaps we will cross, between empathy and sympathy. Not with the intention of not doing so, but with the duty to forgive ourselves if we do.
