Abstract

As a doctor, as a writer and, above all, as a person, I reflect throughout this story, based on real events, on the role played by institutional ableism in our healthcare system. Ableism perpetuates, most of the time without being aware of it, the barriers in health care and the consequent health inequities in people with functional diversity. Using as common thread the life and the last experiences with the healthcare world of Antonio, a patient with congenital deafness, I delve into the importance of maintaining an active and alert role against the possible discrimination that our most vulnerable patients may suffer.
