Abstract

In order to achieve the objectives of sustainable development in the urban environment, technological innovation and digitalization are often mentioned, which are central elements in the so-called Smart city. This technological innovation, usually focused on improving the provision of services to citizens, has also been proposed for use in planning, and several works have been published that have proposed and even used digital systems to support the processes of design and development of urban planning. In the present work, some possibilities of these intelligent tools are presented, particularly with respect to the evaluation of planning alternatives through impact simulations, and the capacity to efficiently identify the optimal solution based on the parameters and requirements provided to the programme, such as those derived from the principals of equility and sustainability. Despite its undoubted advantages, there are also problems associated with this technology, which can affect, among other issues, the transparency of the administrative decision or its adequate motivation.
